Flagstaff Marathon - Race StartFlagstaff’s first marathon in 20 years was held last Saturday, September 23rd at the Flagstaff Nordic Center. Presented by the North Country Community Health Center and hosted by the Flagstaff Nordic Center, the Flagstaff Marathon was an off-road race consisting of a 10K, Half-Marathon and Full Marathon trail race. Racers from all over the southwest enjoyed the cool weather, beautiful scenery and well planned race course.

North Country Community Health Center is a sliding fee scale clinic that is raising money for their new facility on 4th street.  Development director Rick Swanson said of today’s race “the first ever Flagstaff Marathon exceeded our expectations. Everybody had a great time, runners, volunteers and spectators. We have built a great foundation and are looking forward to this race being a solid fundraiser for years to come”.

The Flagstaff Marathon was an off-road race consisting of a 10K, Half-Marathon and Full Marathon trail race.  Racers from all over the southwest enjoyed the cool weather, beautiful scenery and well planned race course. One racer was quoted as saying “this was the best laid out race course I have ever run.”

The 10K race was won by Flagstaff’s Michael Ort in 47 minutes 59 seconds.  Adam Cornette (51:12) and Donald Sanders (52:05) rounded out the top 3 men.

Jacklynn Fallon smoked the women’s field with a time of 52:26.  Giavanna Bednar (58:57) and Rebecca Blodgett (1:00:18) finished the top 3 women in the 10K race.

Erika Edwards, Women's Half Marathon WinnerJereamy Kamakaala had a huge lead in the men’s Half-Marathon with a time of 1:39:18. Thomas Cupis (1:45:55) and Marcus Machacek (1:49:21) also had great times for grueling half.

Erika Edwards finished second overall and first in the women’s Half-Marathon with a time of 1:41:56. Sara Wagner (1:48:27) and Ursula Hanna (2:03:09) posted great times to top of the 3 best.

Catlow Shipek, Full Marathon WinnerThe signature event, the Full Marathon, was won by Tucson’s Catlow Shipek with a time of 3:06:23; a time that would beat most runners on pavement. Erin Hutchinson (3:20:55) and Dave Goldberg (3:47:52) brought in the men’s top 3.

Alexis Baca-Spry finished the 26+ mile race in 4 hours 25vminutes 59 seconds to win the women’s marathon. Shannon Swartz (4:37:12) and Margaret Grove (4:39:15) rounded out the top 3 women.

Kids Kilo Winners: James Hampshire, Alex Tebbs, and Rae JohnsonThe kids also enjoyed the festivities with a 1K ‘Kid’s Kilo’. James Hampshire won the kids race, Alex Tebbs was second and Rae Johnson was third.

Wendell Johnson, the owner of The Flagstaff Nordic Center said “we had first time marathoner’s and lifelong runners. All the racers enjoyed the great weather and were excited to participate in this race again next year. We are looking forward to working with North Country Community Health Center to continue raising money for their mission.” Next years race is already scheduled for September 22, 2007 and with this year’s strong response race organizers expect next years race to quickly reach Forest Service limits.
