Cross Country Ski Race, FreeStyle

It was a great day at the Flagstaff Nordic Center.  FNC hosted the AZ Cup Freestyle Nordic Ski Race on Sunday March 2nd.  Twenty Five racers registered for the last of the AZ Cup 2 race series, more than doubling 2007 numbers.  As momentum for Nordic skiing grows in Northern Arizona, so does the competition.

Last year, Teresa Hunt was the sole female competitor in the Freestyle, or Skate Race.  This year, 7 ladies joined her on the trails.  Teresa still walked with the Gold, besting her own course record with a time of 33min06sec.  Agnes Drogni and Kristen Hayden finished the podium in 2nd and 3rd.  Ashley Reyment, of Scottsdale, finished with a time of 1hr29min41sec.  Sunday was Ashley’s second time on Nordic Skate Skis. 

Ryan Schmidt topped the men with a new course record of 30min41sec.  Ryan was 2nd place in 2007 only one second behind the winner.  Ben Sullivan (31min43sec) and Ken Walters (31min45sec) added some excitement to the finish line sprinting for 2nd and 3rd.

The best times in the Classic Style and Freestyle races were combined for the AZ Cup winners.  'Coach' Steve Ilg came out on top with a time 1hr23min05sec.  Paul Kuefler (1hr30min09sec) and John Crittenden (1hr33min15sec) also competed for the cup, but could not overcome Ilg’s fantastic finish in the Classic Race. Teresa Hunt again topped the ladies with a combined time of 1hr28min39sec.  Teresa remains undefeated in Nordic Racing at the Flagstaff Nordic Center. 

"The local cyclists in particular are starting to understand what a great off-season training tool is Nordic ski training and racing", Steve Ilg, local Yoga coach and fitness trainer.  Steve has raced in every winter and summer race that FNC race director Tim Allen can remember. 

The Flagstaff Nordic Center has hosted a variety of competitive events since owner Wendell Johnson purchased the ski area with his wife Jen in 2002.  The AZ State Mountain Bike Championships, The Flagstaff Marathon, Duathlons, Trail Runs, Snowshoe Races and Nordic Ski Races have all been on the roster.
