It was a cold and snowy day. While more than 20 inches of snow fell at the Flagstaff Nordic Center on Sunday, a few handfuls of brave skiers came out for the Classic Style portion of the AZ Cup Cross Country Ski Series.
Only 10 die hard skiers could be found to endure and enjoy the wintry conditions. With several inches of fresh snow on the ground, there were no records broken at Sunday’s race. Teresa Hunt claimed the women’s title for the second year in a row with a time of 55min33sec. Steve ‘Coach’ Ilg won the men’s race in 47 minutes and 35 seconds. Coach Ilg was second in last year’s race. Paul Kuefler was the only racer to clock a personal best, finishing in third place, 38 seconds faster than his own time last year.
The series continues on March 2nd with the Freestyle, or Skate Ski race. Organizers hope for better weather for the final race of the series.
For the second year in a row, Steve Ilg remains the only winter athlete to aspire to the “Flagstaff Winter Triathlon” title. This illustrious title was thrown upon Coach Ilg last year as he was the only racer to compete in the “Snow or No” Snowshoe Race and both AZ Cup Country Ski Races. Steve will have to wait for next year to see if anyone else loves snow enough to challenge his coveted and lonely title!!
